Andisiwe MGWINTENI

Through a practice that interweaves elements of grief, healing, and gender, I explore identity and ancestral roots. My art is deeply personal, often focusing on themes of resilience and memory, while challenging norms around cultural silencing and misogyny.

Throughout my artistic journey, I have sought to intricately weave themes of grief, loss, trauma, and healing into the rich tapestry of South African culture. Working with reed grass, I create mats and sculptures that serve as both personal expressions and cultural reflections. At the heart of my work lies the creation of a rondavel. This rondavel represents more than just a structure; it is a space where I can root myself, a place where I can truly say I belong.

Central to my work is the theme of self-location a deeply personal quest to understand our origins, confront the challenges we face, and draw upon the inner strength necessary to navigate life's complexities. My exploration of healing spans from personal introspection to broader cultural practices, reflecting the multifaceted ways in which we mend both our inner and collective worlds.

My creative journey speaks to the transformative power of art in reconciling past traumas and shaping a present self rooted in heritage and feminine strength.
