Kayleigh GOUVIAS
As an artist, I strive to confront the painful realities of abuse and exploitation faced by women and children in my community. My work is deeply rooted in my personal journey, reflecting the generational trauma I’ve experienced. Through photography and mixed media, I explore themes of resilience and self-worth, transforming my pain into a powerful narrative that resonates with others.
One of my key pieces, “Ougat,” embodies my struggle with identity and societal perceptions, using materials like a young girl’s long sleeve top, beads, and thread to convey complex emotions. This work reflects the sexualization of young girls, inviting viewers to engage with the nuances of language and its impact on identity. Similarly, “DIGNITY” symbolizes the reclaiming of self-worth, showcasing iconic figures crafted from a man’s shirt and bandages. Each artwork serves as a reflection of my struggles and triumphs, inviting deeper contemplation.
Art holds the power to inspire healing and promote social change. By addressing the intricate realities of my upbringing, I aim to create a dialogue around the importance of support and empowerment for those who feel voiceless. My work is an expression of my journey and a call to action for collective healing and resilience in the face of adversity.
