Sian STOLWORTHY
This year, my work has focused on incorporating old cutlery into my jewellery as both visual inspiration and actual trace. My aim is to re-imagine these forgotten details by integrating them into contemporary jewellery. By taking something discarded and transforming aspects of it into new designs, I hope to breathe fresh life into these objects and allow them to be appreciated again in a new context.
I am often in awe of the craftsmanship and attention to detail that someone has put into something as seemingly mundane as a spoon or fork. These objects carry intricate styles and motifs that are rarely seen today, as modern design and mass production have shifted towards bold, simplified forms.
Through the fast-paced industrialisation of society, things such as cutlery, that are made to last forever, are being replaced and discarded. It is my aim to bring awareness to the current wastefulness of the world and the way we consume. All the knives, spoons and forks used as inspiration for this collection have been found in second hand stores.
Through this work, I want to share my fascination in a way that invites others to engage with it. The jewellery is presented alongside the original spoons so that viewers can experience a little bit of the joy that I find in these old, overlooked things, and see how beauty can be found in the ordinary.
