Winter School 2026 BUILD A PORTFOLIO for Fine Art and Graphic Design

PORTFOLIO WORKSHOPS-  A WORKSHOP FOR GRADE 12 LEARNERS

This workshop is intended to support prospective creative learners to build the portfolio needed for an application, come experience the Ruth Prowse School of Art and meet academic staff. 
All materials are provided. Space is limited.

MORNING 9:00 am to 12:00 pm

Fine Art and Graphic Design Morning Introduction:

Graphic Design and Fine Art require the demonstration of a few similar skills and will share a number of classes in first year to hone these skills further. The portfolio course consisting of observational abilities, drawing of people and objects with compositional.

This portfolio workshop for both prospective FA and GD students can accommodate 20 students .

This will also be a great way to make new friends!
Lynette and Colijn will give guidance on basic portrait drawing, observation skills, facial proportions, light and shadow to develop volume, and placement on the page to develop a pencil on A3 paper (to be provided) portrait ready to from part of the required portfolio. RPSA will provide pencils, charcoal and eraser.

 AFTERNOON – FINE ART 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm: 

Fine Art Component: Colijn Strijdom Landscape
Landscape drawing within the beautiful garden and building of RPSA. Colijn will give guidance on composition, depth, texture and tone to develop a pencil on A3 paper (to be provided) drawings. RPSA will provide pencils, charcoal and eraser.

AFTERNOON – GRAPHIC DESIGN 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm:: 

Graphic Design component: Lester van der Merwe
In this portfolio development session, Graphic Design students will explore the fundamentals of poster design through a hands-on cut-and-paste approach. Using found imagery, typography, and optional illustration, students will create a unique poster based on a subject of their choice. Elements can also be digitised and refined in Photoshop, giving participants a taste of both traditional and digital design processes. The exercise is designed to develop each student's design eye, with a focus on composition, hierarchy, typography, and visual storytelling. Your project will fulfil one of the requirements for the Graphic Design Application.
